resilience and preparedness
Kotiate is a less common form than the recognisable patu. As such, tohunga whakairo Michael Matchitt is preserving the traditional forms of Māori weaponry, and this gorgeous piece is one of a kind.
The strong grain of the kōwhai is complemented by pākati and haehae, in acknowledgement of whakapapa, history, and family lines. Combined, all of this represents the resilience that results from being prepared (armed) for what lies ahead.
In these trying times, this kotiate would make a particularly appropriate and stunning 21st gift - one that the carver considers a far more culturally significant gift than the post-colonial 21st key.
