the energy to protect
Kōwhai is a less-used timber in contemporary times. As a native wood, it simply adds to the value of this patu as a stunning traditional Māori gift.
The surface patterning is pākati and haehae which both refer to genealogical lines and ties. In the centre is raperape, a strong form that represents power, energy, potential. Combining those brings about symbolism of the bearer carrying the power and potential to stand, to protect, to forge forward.
This is a taonga that can be handed down the generations.
