the mana, strength, and protection of whakapapa
Whakairo Māori (Māori carving) is predominately about telling stories of whakapapa and identity. Carved figures represent significant tīpuna (ancestors), and histories are recorded in their forms.
This stand-alone piece has been carved from recycled tōtara. Extremely lightweight, it would be suitable for shipping or carrying overseas. The surface patterning incorporates tradition moko forms, kowhaiwhai, pākati, and raperape, and as such, can take on the continuation of the receiver's story.
