the speed and drive to move forward
This wahaika kotiate is ornately carved. The beautiful flowing nature of the form is embellished with a stylised wheku (head) which would traditionally have acted as a guardian for its carrier. The puhoro surface pattern is often seen on tā moko and carved on the front of waka, symbolising speed and forward movement.
Mangeao is a native timber, and this piece was recovered from whenua in Maniapoto lovingly cared fro by 5 generations of the same whānau.
